We are  working with APIA Driving School to bring the Safer Driver Course to Nowra.
The course is a  3 hour group discussion with other learners, and a 2 hour coaching session in a vehicle, along with another learner. Book with a friend and do the vehicle session together.
The Safer Driver Course is designed to increase awareness & practice in:
  • Safe following distances
  • Crash avoidance spaces
  • Speed management
  • Safe gap selection
  • Hazard perception and observation
  • Managing peer and lifestyle pressures.

Not only does the course cover these invaluable skills but also will give you 20 hours in your log book. That's a definite bonus.

It is easy to get caught up with the daily humdrum. Local photographer Andy Hutchinson reminds us how lucky we are to live in the beautiful South Coast of NSW.
No driving required.

Mobile Phones

A P1 driver recently asked me if they can use the GPS function on a mobile phone. So I thought it would be a good idea to post this video produce by Transport For NSW.
The rule is quite clear in that "Learner and provisional P1 drivers must not use any function of a mobile phone while driving or when the ignition is on."
Also worth noting the "ignition on". The car must be parked and off.
A GPS device that is not a mobile phone is permitted for all drivers, as long as the device is secured in a mounting fixed to the vehicle and does not obscure the driver’s view of the road. The device must not be placed in a location that will increase the likelihood of injury in a crash.
For more information go to Know The Rules.

Driving lesson in Nowra
Wildlife on our roads

When instructing a learner driver it is important to discuss the danger of wildlife on our roads. According to Transport NSW Centre for Road Safety one in seven crashes on country roads involves an animal. When they stray onto the road it’s hard to know what they’ll do next. Animals are quick and extremely unpredictable. Slowing down and being prepared could save a collision or even save your life.

Most important - Never swerve – it is safer to hit an animal than swerve and lose control of your vehicle.  Your Own Safety should always come first & unfortunately, sometimes it might not be possible to miss an animal.
  • Be aware – animals are more active and harder to see at sunrise and sunset
  • Reduce your speed – slow down when you see animal  warning signs
  • Stay alert – animals are unpredictable, so expect the unexpected
  • Brake safely – only brake when it is safe to do so if you see an animal on the road
  • Report injured wildlife – call WIRES on

Sometimes pedestrians are slow to Moove
Learning to drive in regional areas has distinctly different hazards to city driving.
The old says goes Never work with children or animals – they are completely unpredictable.

Remember
Slow Down - Be Alert – Be prepared

Large vehicles need room to turn
A driving lesson in Nowra
I took this photo while on a lesson recently to highlight the importance of being aware of large vehicles that need to lane-share in order to turn a corner. I have seen people that think there is enough room in front try to pass which is still considered an offence. Did you also know that ” Disobey do not overtake turning vehicle sign (left turn)” is a $248 fine with 2 demerit points?
(not suggesting this is happening here)

Did you find yourself complaining about the long weekend holiday traffic?
Spare a thought for motorists in China where it is estimated half the population took a holiday.
That’s around 750 million people...
Here a 50 lane expressway merges down to 20 lanes.
